October 10, 2025 Coalition Meeting
Meeting Information
Information about the October 10, 2025 meeting (more detail on the attached document)
This meeting will serve as a kick-off for our exploration of the uses of Artificial Intelligence in STEM Education. Whether you are an expert or a novice we hope you will join us for the session which will include an overview of a GPT-powered scenario generator designed to produce realistic, contextualized math situations. Our presenters, Rita Wang and David Cassell, developed the generator as a part of the NSF-funded Needed Math Project. Attendees at the meeting, both in-person and online, will have an opportunity to experiment with the scenario generator to create activities. The day is designed with plenty of time to work with the scenario generator and also to discuss the merits and issues associated with the use of this kind of AI in STEM Education.
The meeting will be in-person at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, 2045 Morse Rd., Building E., but can also be accessed via zoom. The zoom link and full agenda for the meeting will be sent one week prior to the meeting.
We must send a list of those attending in person to the Department of Natural Resources a week before the meeting, and you will need to show identification to enter the complex. If you are going to attend the meeting either in person or virtually, PLEASE RSVP (and order lunch if you want the lunch) by completing the Google form:

Presentation Title: "Meet GPT: Designing Custom Instructional Tools Powered by Generative AI"
David Cassell, Ph.D., is an organizational psychologist and data scientist who integrates industrial-organizational psychology with advanced analytics to improve employee experience and organizational effectiveness. As a Lead Data Scientist at Deloitte, he applies expertise in survey design, psychometrics, data science, and generative AI to provide talent-related insights to leaders. He has experience conducting job analysis, competency modeling, adverse impact analysis, assessment development, and predictive modeling using a variety of talent-related data. At his alma mater, Hofstra University, he serves as a research consultant NSF-funded Needed Math Project where he contributed to the development of a generative AI-based mathematics scenario generator to aid in curriculum development. He also teaches as an Adjunct Instructor at New York University, sharing his expertise in industrial-organizational psychology with undergraduate students.
Xi (Rita) Wang holds a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and is SHRM-certified, credentialed by the Society for Human Resource Management for her expertise in HR practices and workforce development. She is a researcher on the NSF-funded Needed Math Project, where she develops contextualized math scenarios based on real-world technician tasks and contributes to research on the quantitative skills used in technical
workplaces. Rita is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Baylor College of Medicine, where she applies her psychometric expertise to basic science research supported by the USDA Agricultural Research Service.
Summary:
In this presentation, we will introduce a GPT-powered scenario generator designed to produce realistic, contextualized math situations based on tasks that manufacturing technicians encounter. The tool grew out of our work on the NSF-funded Needed Math Project, where we developed real-world mathematics scenarios for manufacturing technicians and then used the GPT feature from OpenAI to automate and expand this process.
We will:
- Share our involvement in the Needed Math Project and the inspiration for the generator,
- Introduce the GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) feature, explain how we built the tool, and share best practices
- Demonstrate the scenario generator with examples from various manufacturing sectors,
- Discuss other potential instructional uses such as tutoring,
- Discuss current limitations, including accuracy and the need for instructor oversight.
